    Question Setting up a S&W M&P -10 Rifle

A friend of mine just got a M&P -10, any suggestions on how to set it up. I.E. Sights handgaurds, comps, brakes, F.H., optics, anyone who owns one or has a setup they reccomend please post pics. Rifles planned uses are Coyote, Deer, & Elk hunting, at 500 yards range or less, & as a home defense rifle. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    A Swiss Army rifle?
Really to try for all of those objectives and have it do all of them well is a bit of a tall order.
For hunting purposes a fixed power scope will serve well, one less thing to worry about in the middle of a hunt.
Target shooting a variable power scope will shine.
Home Defense purposes forget the scope and go with a red dot/holographic or irons.
A target rifle you are going to want a crisp and light trigger, bad news on a hunting/defense rifle.

    The rifle is a tool.
We have all had some form of an all in one tool and really, they are usually marginal performers for anything you try to do.
They are at best a compromise.
Try for a doitall rifle and you are going to have to compromise somewhere.
Ask your friend what is the most important task he wishes to achieve with the rifle and focus on that, the rest will have to be compromised.

Tell him he is wanting more than one single rifle will excel at.

For generations rural Americans lived, hunted, & fought with often one or two types of firearms. Now I' d be the last one to claim to only want or own just 2 firearms. But I dont see how this is such an immpossible or lofty goal to have a rifle that can meet or exceed the few requirements my friend asks of his only long gun. The round it fires is capable of taking all the game he hunts. The length weight and features of the rifle does not preclude it from property/ home defense. Now obviously its not the ideal in this department as shooting an unsuppressed .308 in a confined space is definitly not a pleasant experience. Can anyone reccomend a good frangible/ defense load for the.308? What combination of accessories would allow my friend to all of these. Granted my friend would likely love to own an Elk rifle, a deer rifle, a home defense suppressed .300 black out uber cool ninja rifle & a minigun on his truck. But face it in todays economy , the price of gas, ammo, and firearms in general at least 3 of the above listed dream firearm purchases aint happening

^^^This advice comes from probably the best rifleman in the state if not the nation.

We are not in rural America anymore nor using frontstuffers for rifles.
You asked for advice and you got what you asked for.
    Honest advice.
In an urban area a 308 for home defense is waaay overkill, frangible rounds or not. You are responsible for every round you fire.
If he is planning on spending money on the rifle then concentrate on on the hunting/distance capabilities of the rifle.
For home defense purposes have him save his Starbucks cash for a couple of weeks and pick up a used 870 or 500, a much better tool for the job. They can be had for a couple of hundred bucks left and right. He is gonna spend way more than that trying to make the rifle excel at all his wishes, only to end up disappointed in the end because it ended up being a compromise at all his wishes.

Listen to this advice... Unless you live in rural America, why would you quote about it?

If your friend is in any metro area, then there is no one size fits all rifle...

I DO live in rural America- 47 acres, 1/2 mile long driveway, house on a hill with 360* views... And I don't think there is a one size fits all rifle for ME...

But he doesn't need a suppressed 300 blackout ( I don't have one), or the other options you mentioned... Start with 3 gun... Handgun, shotgun, and a high-powered rifle. If you can't afford a second after getting one, then you're buying firearms out of your price range... Not saying this to judge, or to sound high and mighty... Just from someone who believes in living within your means.

My friend does live out in the sticks 100+ acres. Its not my rifle nor my idea for him to purchase it. Trust me when I say that any and all advice will be considered and appreciated by him. Also if he were to use starbucks cash hed probably never get another firearm
I firmly believe in the motto improvise adapt overcome. In this set of circumstances all 3 parts of that motto will apply. As an aside just got done reading an article about CA wildlife fish and game wardens being issued POF .308's as theyre patrol rifle. Apparently they get into a decent amount of confrontations with 2 legged animals as well as the 4 legged kind. Anyone had any experience with .308 frangibles? Any advice on a decent optic? Getting more of the your going to fail buy more guns than the heres some helpful info on your original question vibe. Not trying to step on toes but if you wear slippers it tends to hurt more. Thanks for all the input though suprised folks took the time to reply.

"We are not in rural America anymore"
You may well not live in rural America, many still do. I asked on my friends behalf what setup within the given parameters would be ideal. I allready have my opinions as to how I would set up his rifle if I were in his somewhat unfortunate situation. Attempting to get a bigger picture and gain insight from folks who know more than I do as it pertains to hunting and shooting in general.

And that is a good, simple and reliable setup for him to run and be pretty versitale. As he uses it more he will figure out what will work best for his purposes.
We have all seen somebody buy a new rifle and spend gobs of glue trying to make it do everything. Eventually 3/4 of it gets sold off and they go with practical additions.
Just trying to keep him from making the same mistake many before him have.
