Snap-traps tend to have 'odor-of-death' within six hours of the critter getting snapped but my experience with poison, in CO, is that it's dry enough here that they simply mummify. YMMV.
If using poison (either personally or via an exterminator), PLEASE be careful of pets finding the bait.
