Default Dad Sticks Up for Guns on Facebook Hours After Toddler Shoots Himself

Just hours after Brian Holbrook's 3-year-old son fatally shot himself with a gun that was improperly stored inside a bedroom closet, the Michigan dad took to his Facebook page to affirm his continued support for guns.
Police in Dundee say the toddler was wandering around his own home when he stumbled upon the gun inside a case on the floor of an unlocked bedroom closet.
The weapon, which belongs to Joshua Michael Greenhill, a family friend who had been living at Holbrook's two-story residence, was reportedly loaded, and had a bullet in the chamber.
Three other children, including Holbrook's two other children and Greenhill's son, were inside the home when Damon accidentally shot himself in the head.
Holbrook posted a status update to Facebook a short while after Damon was pronounced dead, saying he and the rest of the family are "all hoping to wake up from this nightmare."
Nonetheless, he stressed that the incident did not change his attitude toward gun ownership.
"I have nothing wrong with guns it's with (sic) this country was built on," Holbrook wrote. "I will still support the Second Amendment."
"All I ask," Holbrook continued, "is that everyone please, please safety first lock it up and put it out of reach of anyone that has no business being around a gun especially kids."
Greenhill was arrested and charged with Careless Discharge Of Firearm, a crime punishable by up to 2 years in prison or a $2000 fine.
Police Chief David Uhl said additional charges were likely forthcoming.

just a reminder that if you have kids

    a. you should have them trained to stay the hell away from guns if there is not an adult present
    b. have them locked up and out of reach

my daughter is 3 and wont go near any of my guns

in fact if you ask her if daddy has guns she says "daddys guns NOOOOOOOO touch"

feel horrible for this guy i couldnt imagine losing my daughter

Just terrible. I couldn't even imagine dealing with that.

Gun owners who don't take reasonable measures to secure them piss me off. Especially if there are kids in the home.

Let this, and similar incidents, be a lesson for all of you who have firearms in your home. When my kids were young they were taught that guns were not toys and to stay away from them and if they found one to tell an adult right away. That being said, I always kept them locked away. Kids are curious creatures.

I taught my kids gun safety and how to properly handle and safety check firearms at a very early age. The biggest thing I did was take the mystery out of it by telling my kids that they could see/handle any of my guns anytime they wanted, just ask me first and I will never tell you no. Took all of the mystery away and never had an issue. Take the mystery and taboo (you cant touch this) out of things and you'll find kids quickly become disinterested.

I TOTALLY agree and did the same thing with my kids. I kept everything locked up but whenever they were curious and asked I pulled them out, talked about safety and let them play with them, ask questions etc. I absolutely agree with tqking the mystery out of them.

OMG...my heart breaks for this father. I'm pretty sure I couldn't live with myself if that happened inside my house. I have a gun safe for a reason and education is paramount. You have to teach them safety when they're young! Man oh man...this is as sad as it gets. Prayers for him and his family.
