I wonder why the fuse popped? I think I'll put a surge protector in to possibly help prevent this again although I have gotten pretty good at taking the dishwasher apart.

but a surge protector is a waste of time . it' only going to protect you from super high voltage spikes ( like from a lighting strike) and will likely blow the fuse anyways if that happens.

Figuring out why the fuse blew is hard to say .

either something inside the dishwasher is going bad and shorting out or it could have been as simple as a manufacturing defect in the fuse itself. replace the fuse with the same rating and wait and see what happens . if it blows again need to dig farther into the dishwasher and figure out what is blowing it . ( pump motor going out and shorting ? heater element shorting out ? worn/bad wiring? )

What was the rating on the fuse ? ( how many amps ? )
