Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan have attacked the US consulate in the western city of Herat.

The Taliban said a suicide bomber had detonated explosives early on Friday, before other fighters opened fire.

Initial reports say seven people have been wounded. A gun battle between insurgents and security forces is ongoing near the building.

It is the latest in a series of attacks ahead of the withdrawal of foreign combat troops from Afghanistan in 2014.

Earlier this month Taliban targeted the Torkham US base in eastern Afghanistan, sparking a lengthy gun battle in which three insurgents were killed.

The attack began around 6 a.m. with the powerful explosion. The car bomber detonated his explosives around 60 yards from the consulate compound, said Sayed Fazlullah Wahidi, the governor of Herat province. Other attackers then began firing on security forces in the area. Gen. Rahmatullah Safi, chief of police in Herat province, said an Afghan translator who apparently worked at the consulate died, while two police and two private Afghan security guards at the U.S. post were wounded.
