Default Rescue Underway to Save Bird from Power Line

    WTF That is all.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - A seagull caught in power lines near the Lesner Bridge for more than 24 hours was finally rescued Thursday morning.
Virginia Dominion Power used a helicopter to free the bird, and it was taken to the Virginia Beach SPCA to be worked on.
WAVY received a call from the Virginia Beach SPCA about the bird, and a WAVY viewer called and said the bird had been there since Tuesday.
"A lot of the times the birds do not see the black line itself when they are flying, and if the wind catches them, he probably flew directly into the power line itself and wrapped his wing," said Rose Chandler, a volunteer with the VB SPCA.
A WAVY News photojournalist in the area reported the seagull appeared to be alive Wednesday, and was trying to move its head and flap its caught wing.
"He's still alive," Chandler said on Wednesday. "He can actually live for days like that until he becomes dehydrated and just cannot take it anymore."
Chandler works to rehabilitate migratory birds. She contacted Virginia Dominion Power, hoping to get a bucket truck to free the unlucky seagull.
"He's basically up there suffering at this point," Chandler said.
Virginia Dominion Power spokeswoman Bonita Harris said the bird is too high for a bucket truck to rescue it, but they do have a solution.
"What we have to do is send in a helicopter with special equipment, it actually has a platform attached to the side, and one of our linemen will have to get on the platform and physically remove the bird from the line," Harris said.
Harris said high winds near the bridge prevented the rescue from happening on Wednesday
Some say the rescue is too much fuss for a seagull, but not Chandler.
"I'm a Christian, and I believe we are all here on this earth to not only take care of ourselves, but also the animals God created, and this is why I do it," she said. "Somebody has to do it, and we can't just leave it up there defenseless and powerless and suffering."

Seagull on power-line or kittens on train tracks, only in America...

I can only hope that there was some danger of damage to the lines and a possible power outage, else this is just ridiculous.

    You folks seem to forget.
More people will dial 911 for a barking dog, then a woman screaming for HELP.

    Yes to all.

This reminds me of Boulder Open Space charging non-county residents a parking fee but they have money to move prairie rats from one area to another.
