Yup, my sister just had the same thing happen. A woman crashed into her, was written a ticket for failure to yield but provided fake insurance. Then when my sister went to file a claim they said that the other lady was not covered. She called the lady, who gave a fake phone number, then contacted the police who told here that there was nothing they could do. She had liability only so her insurance told her to have a nice day. The police could do nothing? Nothing like enforce a compulsory insurance law designed for this exact scenario? It has been a month and she is looking at going to court against the lady, but she has nothing anyway so there is no chance of getting any repayment. Get better insurance and avoid the problem.

It'd just be another ticket for that lady, but wouldn't have helped your sister.

It might not be worth much, but I'm guessing it would have at least made her feel a little better.

And perhaps help in leading to a case (or incarceration ) against the (likely repeat) offender down the road.

Who did she provide the info to?

I ask b/c I was recently rear-ended here in Golden. I didn't swap insurances with the lady who hit me, the Golden Police Department facilitated all of that and gave us instant accident reports. Was the first time I'd ever gotten that.
Additionally, for the past year or three, any time i've been pulled over, I've had to prove insurance as well. Not sure what the recourse would be if you whip up a fake insurance form and lie to a cop, though.
