V-max Tip Shearing.

Good eve. to all, and thanks for the forum. Last wk we picked-up a Bushmaster .223 from Cabelas; including a set of RCBS dies for it. New brass and 55gr V-max. The press is a Hornady Pro-7. Problem comes from the seater die. As it straightens the bullet into the brass it shears off about 5 % of the nylon insert. I don't think you can get accuracy with that happening. I have swelled the head to max and it still takes a bit. Should I try for another brand of seater, or ?? Sorry to be longwinded but tried to answer what might be a question. Is this a dent or a scrape? I use lee dies and load a bit of 55 V-max. The only problem I have is I need to be aware of the tip and pulling the turret press hard in the seating stage. As long as I pull the ram and gently contact the tip, then pull I have had no issues.

I use a Lee single stage so take that for what its worth.

All lee dies and have loaded and shot hundreds of V-max bullets in a couple calibers with no problems like you encountered. I would say get yourself a different seating die.

Jerry- thanks for the reply. It's a progressive loader so you can only keep the bullet vert. for so long b-4 it goes out of your fingers. It is @ the time that it hits the adjustale depth end that it proceeds to shear an edge off of the red nylon. RCBS knows they have a problem with it shearing but don't have an answer for it. I swelled the end of the adj.cup to get it as close to the side as I can, but it still does it a lil. I load the same bullet(v-mav 40 gr.)/loader for the .204 w/o a sign of it, but the .223 can't take a joke. jc

jerry- thanks for the reply- it's a progressive loader and the shear comes to the nylon after your bullet leaves your finger tips. I reload the same (v-max) for the .204 w/o any problem. I swelled the bullet cup, trying to get less space between the cup and the side wall and very lil help. Talked to RCBS and they know that is a problem. They're sending me a new cup to play with the dremel and see if I can win. jc
