Ammo available in Denver?
What is the ammo availability like in the Denver area right now? I'm taking a trip down in the latter part of October, and I was considering booking my ticket with Alaska Air so that I can haul 50lbs of ammo back to Anchorage (where it is nonexistent). If I want to buy 500 or 1000 rounds of .45 ACP ball ammo, is it available? Thanks!
You should be able to find it in 50 & 100rd boxes at various places, but I haven't seen much bulk anywhere in a while.

Ditto. It is available but expect you'll be hitting multiple places to gather up the quantity you are looking for. Online would be a better option for getting it in bulk but the $100 plus shipping to AK makes it tough.
The ammo situation is much, much better. I've been to several (5-6) shops in the last week. Not as good as it used to be, but I'm seeing most places have a reasonable selection of 50 and 100 rd boxes. Some even have 500/1000 rd cases available but the prices are still less than ideal.
Order online, have it delivered to Denver where ever you are staying and use your plan to haul it home.

Even in the best of times, I've never seen a vendor in CO be cheaper than it can be had online.
I agree. Order it online, have it shipped to Denver and haul it home in your luggage.
I have been to Alaska many times (Ex in laws live in Wasilla) and the prices there have never been as good as what you can get in the lower 48.

What airline permits 50lbs of ammo as checked baggage? I wouldn't assume this unless you get it in writing.
United checked firearms policy permits only 11lbs of ammo.
