I've had them explained as a silencer being a can that basically eliminates the sound of a passing bullet (i.e. subsonic loads with a .22 or .45) or a suppressor that just muffles the noise, making shots quieter. Most standard loads are still going to have the very audible supersonic crack from the bullet.

I doubt those are official or published definitions by any means, so I just usually call any can a suppressor. Haven't had first hand experience with a can that completely silences a load consistently while being run dry.

Both words refer to the same product. They were called silencers since the first one created by Maxim. Later people started being more realistic about the name and suppressor became the prefered term. Now a lot of people just say "can" and don't have to worry about it. Some models (baffles vs. baffles + wipes) are more quiet than others, but not enough to be referred to one way or another.

I would say post the business up here because it is either a sting or he is going to be another liberal nail in the coffin for getting these laws repealed. Get the name out there, then if it is a sting enough attention will be brought to it that it will be closed. If this guy is that far off base then maybe a couple people on here could straighten him out a little. I'm sure he would prefer correcting his business practices than he would time in the pen.
