Now im thinking I want a nexus 7/10 or a galaxy tab 3. Any input?
I've got a galaxy note 10.1 with the s-pen. I like it runs everything just fine. If you dig around on slickdeals they're on clearance all over the place. Picked mine up refurbed for $260ish on groupon.com
This is just my opinion but
if you want to watch movies and play on the internet, read comic books/graphic novels etc.. get a normal android tablet. Unless you want to spend the extra cash for apple then get a ipad.
If you plan to read lots of non picture books get a kindle paperwhite. Not the Fire. The paperwhite e-ink display is way easier on the eyes to read long term, batteries last forever between charges, its lighter, and pretty cheap to boot. The regular kindle or DX are both great too if you don't mind using an external book light if you read in bed.
If you want to do both then buy both devices.
I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 10, a rooted Nook Color that I don't use since getting the galaxy, Kindle paperwhite, regular 2nd gen kindle (replaced by the paperwhite), and the wife had a kindle fire that she just gave to a family member and a kindle fire HD that she uses regularly.
I have a Nook hd 9", in fact i am writing this post from it. I like it alot. My kids got it for me for fathers day. It was on sale for $179 for the 32 G. It is expandable too. I don't know how fast the other tablets this size are but it is reasonably fast.
If you write much will want a bluetooth keyboard. I got an Ionic "i think" for about $40 and it included a leather type case. Accessories are NOT as available for this model. I wanted an otterbox, but they weren't making one for this size. You also have to be careful when you buy things for the hd+9 inch because most of the products are for the hd 7 inch and not everyone labels the products very well, but it worker out ok bcause my wife has the 7'. Kindle and Ipad have lot more accessories than the Nook 9.
The battery life for reading is about 7 hours with the screen turned all of the way up. Using wifi uses a lot of battery time, so probably about 4-5 hours.
I could easily read it at the beach in the sun, with an after market anti reflective cover.I bought a couple extra, so if you buy the nook 9' let me know and maybe I can get it to you. Some things it doesn't do well, maybe it is the free software, is write documents. It is sometimes a little tough to surf the web
It is easy to send emails and the like though.
For the sale price I dont't think you can do better.

My Nook recently went dim. Dim as in it is permanently at about half the brightness of the lowest setting. I can only use it at night, in a cave. I'm looking around for a SD card to load all the stuff I side loaded onto this, then I'll take it in or something. Other than that, we've loved it for web browsing, youtube, and netflix.

I could do that. The computer I side loaded from is kind of dead though.

There is some deal with my desk top that won't read the Nook correctly. I forgot all about that until you reminded me...
