I'm torn on this. It's an employer's right to set whatever policies they wish, but he was obviously endangered, and the employer had nothing in place to protect him from injury. It's not much comfort to know that your heirs may be able to sue if you are prevented from defending yourself at work...

Shell is a big company. They are big enough to push insurance companies around and get any coverage they want. They just choose to have cheaper premiums
