I'm torn on this. It's an employer's right to set whatever policies they wish, but he was obviously endangered, and the employer had nothing in place to protect him from injury. It's not much comfort to know that your heirs may be able to sue if you are prevented from defending yourself at work...

Employer has the option of another insurance company. They choose to have that policy, probably to save money and not because they don't like guns.
