Default HUD: As If Anyone Needed Proof of the Idiocy in Federal Government

If this doesn't convince you the federal government is out of control, like a ship without a rudder, nothing will:

So the federal government helped build Apache ASL Trails, a 75-unit apartment building in Tempe, Ariz., designed specifically for the deaf. Ninety-percent of the units are currently occupied by deaf and deaf-blind seniors.

But now, the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development says Apache ASL Trails violates civil rights law -- because it shows a preference for the hearing-impaired. "A preference or priority based on a particular diagnosis or disability and excluding others with different disabilities is explicitly prohibited by HUD's Section 504 regulations," says a HUD memo about the project. "There is no legal authority contained in any of Apache Trails funding to permit such a priority or preference."

How hard can it be to solve this? The HUD secretary tells his people to "make this stupidity go away" and it should go away. But no... I suspect the inertia is too strong and I also suspect no one wants to accept the responsibility. The buck stops no where.

My God. For some reason this is about as maddening as anything I've heard of come out of a federal bureaucracy. I am so sick of the federal government I could just scream.

If I was in charge of HUD, my response would be, "Didn't they build that complex with those things in mind?" and another response I would have is, "Who cares."

But think about it, if you lived there it would be sweet. No one would complain about loud footsteps our parties or the TV too loud or your barking dog.

HUD has been a center of stupidity for decades. I remember a family friend in the 70s ranting about how HUD forced him to accept renters that he knew were going to default on their rent, the games they'd play to get even more rent-free time in the property before being evicted, and then trash the place as they were being evicted (including tearing out fixtures and burning doors and cabinets in the fireplace). He was accused of "racism" for not wanting to take in the prospective "renters" then accused of being "greedy" for trying to raise the rent to cover the costs of replacing all the crap that was destroyed only because HUD forced him to accept the tenants in the first place.

It happens at ALL levels of government. Back in the '90s, I was managing a tenant improvement (i.e, construction for a new tenant) project at a commercial/retail property in Florida. Before the city would issue a building permit for the work, the property owner had to install about $10,000+ in landscaping improvements. Not long after, Florida had a drought and we received a notice from the utility company that we could no longer use water to irrigate the landscaping. Guess what happened the to the $10,000 in landscaping improvements installed just a few months earlier...

    No, that department is essential.

They are the ones who decided there wasn't money to keep an open-air national park open and simultaneously decided that there was money for guards to keep the citizens out of the open-air national park.

Wait, let me get this straight- the feds helped build the place, now they're saying they want it gone? Sounds like business as usual for the gubment. Then again, looking at the years- 2005 (that was during Bush), now, 2013, oh yeah, Obozo. It's all becoming very clear now...
