Default So the former president of Iran just admitted Reagan committed treason.

Many people who are younger than I don't understand or remember the Iran Contra scandal from the 1980s. Well short of it. Reagan or his team committed treason by bribing the Iranians to hold the US hostages using a weapons deals. Reagan did this in order to make Carter look bad. Basically using US lives and working against our nation aiding our enemies in order to get himself elected.... Well the former president of Iran just admitted that is what happened. He admitted that Reagan bribed Khomeini the Shah of Iran to hold the hostages. It was the thing that got Reagan elected... an act of treason. Why did this all happen, because the Iranians had tons of US equipment that they had no spare parts to (jet fighters and other weapons systems) Reagan promised them those military weapons parts and asked they hold the hostages till after he was elected.

I know many of you here will not like this news. But I thought you might want to read it. I personally hope for the day that a person like Eisenhower can run for president again. I honestly do hope the conservative movement can get rid of the cancer and bring back honorable people I would be proud to vote for. But getting things like that to happen will only happen when people are able to learn from historical mistakes.
You want to read something else interesting that will never got proper news coverage.

You know what yesterday was... the 30 anniversary of the attack in the Marines in Lebanon. The same attack where Reagan tucked tail and ran and the same attack where Reagan had disarmed all the Marines prior to that event. History is not as clear as you all want it to be in reference to the right wing version of Reagan. I don't like Obama... so please please can the conservative movement get is act back together and find the modern Eisenhower?

The "October Surprise" has been a conspiracy theory since it happened . . . absolutely no proof it went down like that . . . and the Iranian president is not a credible source.

"I have no recollection of those events."
(actually I'm slightly too young to have been paying attention when that was going on)

There is no proof offered in that article and the author has a reason to hold a grudge (he also would have been in the loop). Someday everything will get declassified and we'll know, until then we know guns were sold and the money sent to our 'friends' in Central America, both illegal acts. Exactly who ordered it and knew about it, time may well.

You really need to work on your historical comprehension before posting. The putative "October Surprise" has long been a delusion postulated by liberals who were offended by his staunch anti-Communism and just couldn't get over the fact that Americans threw Jimmy Carter out on his ear for being the (now second-) most inept incompetent President in US history.

First, Khomeini wasn't the Shah, he was the Ayatollah that spawned the movement that overthrew the Shah.

Second, the editorial is primarily about 'Argo'. The author claims -- without any substantiation or logical inference -- that Khomeini and Reagan colluded. How exactly they were supposed to even be communicating at a time when communications were embargoed isn't stated. Why Khomeini would have struck a bargain with an actor and former governor when he was unwilling to do so with the current President of the US isn't explained. Remember, this was before Reagan had any actual political power -- he hadn't even solidified the Republican nomination and was actively opposed by the Rockefeller Republicans at the point these talks were supposed to have taken place.

    Third, Bani-Sadr's .... Bani-Sadr. 'nuff said.

What got Reagan elected was the abject failure of Democratic softness against Communism, Carter's demonstrable incompetence (economic malaise, anyone?), and his obvious disconnect from the Real World (remember his "stern letter" to the Soviet Union objecting to their invasion of Afghanistan?). The hostages weren't even released until after the election (Inauguration Day). Nice attempt to rewrite history but it's right up there with Obama's "everything is Bush's fault" mantra.
