i work an outside construction job its starting to get cold here what do you guys reccomend as far as a good jacket/pants combo..... carhart????if so which ones?

also good cold weather steel toe boot?

You gotta man up, wifebeater and shorts for the win. If you go with Carhart try on the different styles of jackets and see what one fits best. There flannel lined pants are nice also.

Carhartt are very durable and long wearing. Do not get the jackets or coats with the permanently attached hoods unless you like a big lump behind your head when operating equipment and vehicles.

The arctic insulated bib-alls are too warm for except the coldest days of winter, unless you are one of the guys that just lean on a shovel and bitch about how cold it is while everyone else is down in the muck busting arse.

Yeah, Carhartt makes some good stuff for sure.

I still think the best cold weather gear to have, would be a plane ticket to somewhere warm instead.

I'm on my 2nd carhart in 13 years, tried a few other jackets. This one is going on 6 years. If you're seated like an operator get one heavier than you think you need. If you're active like a shoveler get one lighter than you think you need.

There is no such thing as cold weather steel toes. Get a reinforced toe Danner. The steel sucks the heat out of your feet.

I got some dickies lined coveralls for last year working out side. They were warm and toastie on every job. And while working on cars is hard it typically isn't break a sweat hard. Some of that work was flat backing it in the snow.

As for warm boots WITH steel toe? No way in hell that is happening no matter how good your socks. If you really need the toe protection check out titanium toes. They do not conduct cold as much. But they still conduct the cold. Expensive though.

The secret to staying warm is silk shirts. I buy good condition silk shirts at the thrift stores (ARC,Goodwill,etc.) Wear the silk shirt next to the skin. Silk is very light weight, does not chafe and seems to keep me marvelously warm for very little weight. Just be careful washing and do NOT put silk in the dryer! Let it air dry. Wool sweater is super warm worn over silk!
