I don't think of it as a survival rifle, but my Kel Tec Sub2000 chambered in .40 S&W will accept mags straight from my Glock 22. The barrel on the carbine gives me an extra 200 ft per second and with a little practice and some holdover it will hit man sized silhouettes easily at 150 yards.

Personally, I don't think there is anything more versatile then a 12 gage shotgun. Easy to swap barrels and the variety of types of ammunition that can be used is better than you will find in almost anything out there. Put a pistol grip on it if you want it short, but I like having a stock on mine.

.22lr firearms are great for small game and if cost is an issue, you probably won't find anything cheaper and more accurate straight out of the box than a Marlin 795 or 60.

Don't just settle on one, get them all and then you have choices. Choices are good.
