Default Help with 9mm mag catch

I built a 9mm AR with Spikes Tactical mag block and I am having trouble with the mags staying in the magwell, one good pull and out they come. Spikes website says to use one of their extended 9mm mag catches but I cannot find it on their web page, or any place else for that matter. Any other suggestion? The mags I am using are C-product.

I've opened up the mag catch area on c-products, synthetic mags , like pmags to get them to stay. The mag catch area of the mag, gets cut out allowing better seating. However before doing that ,put a piece of tape in the mag catch recess, then press the mag catch. If it indents the tape relieve the area. if not longer catch is needed.

Also if you screw the mag release button on a little bit more that will pull the mag catch into the well a little bit more.

Someone makes a 9mm specific mag catch too. Brownells or rock river maybe?

My google-fu is weak today on the phone

Spikes makes (or made) an 9mm mag catch. I have one I bought a couple years ago that fixed mag dropping out problem. According to my notes the AR15 mag catch crosspiece where the threaded stem joins the cross piece that goes foreword where the latch sticks down into the mag is the only difference. According to my notes the the thickness of AR15 crosspiece where the stem attach's is about .156 to .159 inches thick. The Spikes 9mm was only .142 inches thick there. That area is what determines how far the latch engages into the mag.

If I recall correctly I called Spikes and they gave me a part number and I was able to directly order one from them. I also made one by carefully filing a standard AR15 latch backside of the crosspiece to .142 and it works fine.

I can also try to make a picture of where I filed on it if you think it will help.

Jim mentioned that the mag may not be inserting far enough to properly catch. You may have a combination of both shallow engagement of the latch as well as not being inserted to get a good grab a the notch.

    I wish you well.

Edit, I never did find their extended mag catch on their web page. They gave me the part number and ordering instructions when I called them.

Rock River Arms lists a 9mm Magazine Catch for their LAR-9 carbines. They use the converted Uzi mags.

One final edit- I would be inclined to try filing on your catch before I went through the time waiting for a mail ordered special 9mm catch. It is a simple bit of filing. I can post here or PM you a drawing or picture of where it needs to be filed. A standard AR 15 mag latch will only costs $5 to $10. If you file on one and mess it up you aren't out a lot of money.
