It always cracks me up how these leftist/anarchist kids have come to admire Guy Fawkes as some sort of freedom fighter, when he was simply trying to establish a Catholic Theocracy in England.

If they think about it at all, they think they're supporting his pro-blow up parliament and the monarch policy, while turning a blind eye to his substitute a different other monarch and parliament policy.

Mostly I think they're pro-fireworks and bonfires, though.

We're also talking about people that wear Che shirts ... I wonder how many think Che was the drummer from Nirvana?

To me, Nov 5th is not about left or right, or even necessarily about fireworks. To me, Guy Fawkes represents the spirit of dissent and revolution, and that is something that I will remember, remember.

+1 This. Regardless of what drove his actions (replacing one theocracy for another), he and the others involved in the "Gunpowder Plot" were expressing their dissent and seeking political change. In Guy Fawkes time, violent revolution was the only possible means of expressing dissent. While I don't hold out much hope, I certainly pray that we don't return to that.
