Default New AR advice needed. Anyone have experience with the DPMS 3G1 or Mk12 barrel?

I'm considering getting rid of my M1A Scout in favor of a 308 AR. I bought the M1A for something with battle rifle dependability and fun to use irons with but I have another rifle I take out way more if I have the urge to use irons. I considered scoping it but its more of an ordeal than I feel like dealing with.

I considered a Scar 17 but it's a bit past my price range and the 1.5 moa reports aren't as great as I'd hoped for. I'd like to be sub moa with this new rifle. I know I can buy a different lower that will take Pmags but that solution or the proprietary mags turns me off.

These lead me to a 308 AR. The reliability, accuracy and weight of the PredatAR are just what I'm looking for but the price is out of my range. I've had an LR308 before that had great accuracy (I actually got bored with it and sold it for the M1A lol). I'm considering getting another one from DPMS, more specifically the 3G1. Overall it's set up much like my go to 15, same JP rail, stock and break. I don't have any experience with the JP trigger but it sounds like people like it. It would be nice to have the similarity between the two rifles. It has the Mk 12 barrel which I remember reading about before but don't remember how well it does.

So, does anyone have experience with the 3G1? I can't find many reviews on it. I don't necessarily need battle rifle reliability but of course getting as close as possible would be nice. With it being targeted towards 3 gun I'm hoping its pretty good.

Does anyone have experience with the accuracy of the DPMS Mk 12 barrel? Again I'm hoping for sub moa accuracy out of this new rifle.

Am I missing anything any considerations? Thanks for your help!

I might be lost but just trying to help you out and trying to understand what you are exactly asking.
I think your best option is to scope the M1A, but I don't understand why you fell it will be too hard. It will cost $75-200 for the mount but you are also talk about buying more expensive platforms like the scar or a precision 308ar. Why go back to a AR platform if you were board with it? I have owned 2 308Ar and I can say they aren't my cup or tea but if I had to try one again, I think I would purchase a LaRue and cry once.
Sorry I can't help you with a review on the DPMS but I think you should give the M1A a shot.

I think a better scope and ammo could tighten it up a bit more.

Ron- Thanks for the reply. Scoping the Scout has a few issues that aren't that appealing to me. You mount your mount just above where the brass ejects and then brass can jammed against the mount can cause a failure- not such an elegant solution. Then to see through that scope you need some sort of cheek riser, they're out there but again not elegant. I know there are options there but they all seem like band aids for scoping the M1A. I don't mind spending the money on a good scoped solution but I think the M1A makes more sense staying iron sighted (or maybe a red dot or scout scope on barrel mount). I did mention the Scar and the PredatAR but noted they were out of my price range, although I may decide to save up for the LaRue.

Rem- That's just the type of info I was looking to find. I'm assuming those targets were at 100 yards, is that correct? What scope do you have on it? Thanks!

I can't find the DPMS 3G1 in stock anywhere right now. I have a year or so before I'll get to shoot it so I may wait to find one, save for the LaRue or even just build one- at the moment I'm still leaning towards the DPMS though.

The larger group is American eagle m1a match load through the dpms, and the smaller through my 700 p.

My scoped scout would need a bigger target.

The reason you don't here much about the DPMS 3G1 is there in high demand and it seems DPMS only releases a small batches of them at a time. If thats what your looking for stick with it till you find one in stock. I have seen a handful of them now and they seem to be a good compromise between accuracy / price +extra goodies point. But there is a reason why the higher end ar-10 buliders stay busy throughout the year.

After 11months of waiting my GAP-10 is finally ready to be shipped. (Graduation Present from the Parents last year). And yes I think it was worth the wait.

I'm gonna stray off your original question a little bit...

Why not build one? The LR308 platform is nothing more than an AR 15 on steroids, and parts are becoming more and more available. And as far as barrels (which is the hardest part IMO), a bud and I have had great success with the Criterions sold by F/A, and I have one purchased from Rainier that does quite well also.

    Food for thought.

Maddog, I'm definitely considering it. My list is getting started and a Criterion barrel is on it, along with a set of Mega receivers and a UBR stock- probably the only things I'll change too much from the 3G1 layout.
