Default Anyone been to Mexico lately?

I want to surprise my wife and take her on a well deserved short (and affordable) vacation. 3 or 4 nights. One option is Mexico - I've been there a few times, but not for >10 years or so. When I was younger and single the boys and I would fly down and explore all over the place with a backpack and a few hundred bucks and have a blast (Yucatan mostly). With all of the horror stories coming out of Mexico these days it makes me wonder if I should even consider it.

Who's been there lately and where do you recommend?

We did Cancun in August. Also went in 2012, and 2010. Health issues nixed 2011. Never had any issues with crime, drugs, etc. They have a "tourista" police force that patrols Cancun.

We did scuba and the catamaran to Isla Mujeres one year. No excursions last year. Did a day trip to Cozumel to snorkel this year and it sucked, spent half the day traveling.

We've been happy with the all inclusive Riu's. The hotels on the East side of the "7" shape of Cancun have more sandy beaches, but there is a big drop off from the big storm in 2009. The beaches on the top are more rocky.

We did Riu something Peninsula this year. If you get above the 11th floor the view is nice. Did Riu de las americanas last year. The pools weren't as nice. We tend to just hang out at the pool or the resort during the day and sometimes do a dinner or the shows.

OTOH, gf has done the pacific side a few times and hates it. Pacific water is cold, dark, etc.

We're heading to Cabo in less than two weeks. We went last year with friends and had a great time. I was a little apprehensive about heading down there again, but once we got there all was good. Right now there are great prices on flights. last year I spent $1150 just on airline tickets for the two of us, this time I paid $500 less. I just looked up the weather, it will be sunny 88-90 degrees.

I have a home in mazatlan as well as acapulco, as long as you stay in the tourist areas no problems,,,both of those towns are hotspots for drugs too. I am getting ready for a trip to Belize, very cool place to go and english is the spoken language. Much nicer and safer than mexico.

I would look in to Costa Rico. Way less people, way safer, great beaches and tours.
