That's cute and all (I'll certainly repeat it) but left and right in political parlance comes from the fact that during the time of the French revolution the political factions in the National Assembly loyal to the king sat to his right and the revolutionaries (who were in fact communists ... the French revolution was the world's first communist revolution, not a free-republican revolution) sat to his left. After the revolution (and all the guys on the right were dead) they continued the tradition of the radicals sitting on the left, the moderates in the middle and the constitutionalists on the right.
