When the newspapers were actually printed on paper, and they had to be printed by a certain time to be distributed, and there were only a certain number of pages to place stories because the rest was reserved for advertising and the funnies, this type of "news" would not have been reported by the New York Times or the Denver Post.

Endless space on the virtual newspaper and a 24/7 news cycle allows everyone to report just about anything that seems to drive their agenda.

Someone please explain to me why this Pittsburgh gang shooting a few blocks away from the largest high school in Pittsburgh is news to some schlub in the suburbs of Denver. To be fair, I don't care what John Kerry had to say about nuclear negotiations with Iran either.
