I have an Asus k52f laptop, about 3 years old. Haven't used it in 4 days, go to log on and it says user profile service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

Tried to restart and it says one of my discks needs to be checked for consistency.

I cancel that operation. Want to see if you guys have any advice before I go further.

I have most everything backed up on an external hardrive so content isn't much of a concern. I have been thinking about wiping the who thing and starting over as this computer had malware a year or so ago and I got it clean (as clean as I thought I could).

Sounds like it could be a hard drive failure (either now or imminent). I'd go ahead with the check it wants to run. Once you get in, back everything up (which sounds like you've done, but can't hurt to have a "fresh copy".)

My google search tells me it is possible it wasn't shutdown properly. Maybe i just closed it without shutting it down and over the course of 4 days the thing completely died? Is it possible to lose your login password capability if the battery completely died?

Some places say this is normal and frequent. Others say it is a sign of possible or imminent disk failure. These $400 laptops usually don't last this long so I should be happy I guess

Have you tried booting up in safe mode? The HD may be failing, however, I have found that when that impacts a user profile there are times you can boot into safe mode, delete the user profile, restart and login without issue. Then I suggest backing up your data and either replacing the drive or buying a new laptop, then you can restore your files and not lose anything. NOTE: A lot of data is stored in the user profile, make sure you move what you want saved out of your profile to the root of the C: drive prior to deleting the profile.

If that does not work you can purchase an adapter for the HD in that laptop that will allow you to plug it into a USB port on another machine and pull data that way as well. It is rare you cannot retain data unless the HD controller completely poops itself. Of course if you already backup your data off box you are set and I wouldn't worry about it anyway. If you decide to replace the drive look into getting an SSD.

I didn't see a mention of the OS version, but if you're on Windows 7, don't just delete your profile directory. That will create some new problems where you keep getting a temporary profile.

found some instructions online and deleted the user profile, or at least started to, but it seems one portion of it was missing.

so I just wiped the whole thing out. started the computer fresh and it is good to go now. got all my pics and documents loaded back onto it from my external hard drive. I'm glad I bought that thing!

hopefully anything bad that was on here got wiped out as well.

Most Microsoft Operating Systems benefit from an annual fresh install. The registry is a mess after 12 months of installing and deleting stuff. Whatever you think the OS is doing, is only the tip of the iceberg. Windows does things even after it tells you it isn't doing them. Imagine your Windows computer being run by President Obama. Same thing. At least you don't have to wait for four years to get a chance at something new.

A few years ago my wife asked for an Apple MacBook because she knew I wouldn't keep taking it apart and fiddling with it so much. I did consider putting Yellow Dog Linux on it, but it only gets used to surf the internet
