Even if it had a balance shaft/belt that went it would pretty much give the same result I just described.
Yes. But all of that was secondary once I saw the parts in the cylinder. I thought about pulling the valve cover and also checking timing but I have been booked way too solid to do that. Had a cancellation today due to the snow and was happy for a little more time.

Part of me wants to see this in person so I can play detective too since I used to live for turning wrenches but the other part of me is thankful I own newer reliable vehicles under full manufacturer's warranty that I maintain so I don't have to worry about such things in 12 degree weather.

Nope. Not here. My Tacoma had some silly seatbelt recall but I told them I don't need no stinkin' seat belt! Actually, mine wasn't one of the targeted whoopties so I'm good. That and the Kia surprisingly hasn't had anything serious which I was surprised about being the first year of an all new model & a Kia. lol I know they've come a long ways but I expected something to surface.

You are welcome to come on down and tear into this 600 lb pile of scrap metal. I may or may not get around to messing with it.

A very generous offer indeed but I'm going to have to pass. I've got enough of my own issues that need addressed w/o taking on someone else's. ;-)

What exactly happened internally is not a major issue though. It done broke, need new. Curiosity may get the better of me when I have some breathing room, may not too.

first time I did the timing belt on my allroad (2.7T) I just about crapped myself. I gladly paid someone $1000 when it needed it again
