Remembering John Fitzgerald Kennedy

So I wasn't alive, obviously, but my mother says, to her, 50 years ago today is forever burned into her memory in the same way that Columbine and 9/11 are burned into mine. The most common question asked is: Do you remember where you were when JFK was shot? Of course JFK won't be remembered for any great accomplishments or achievements, except that he was a great speaker, well liked by both sides of the aisle, and was the first American President assassinated since McKinley in 1901, and only the 4th US President ever assassinated. But what he will be remembered for, and this is mostly my opinion based on history and the things I've learned over the years- John F Kennedy was the last of a rare breed- the "Good" Democrats. In my opinion, based on what we've seen in the time since, JFK can be attributed to a special kind of Democrat, the "Kennedy Democrat." We haven't seen another like him, and I seriously doubt there ever will be another Democrat like him. Granted, he was a democrat back in a time when the party was much more aligned to the right that it is now. But RIP Mr. President, you are missed still 50 years later, even by those of us who weren't even alive at the time.

The worst thing to come from Kennedy's assassination was the Johnson administration. In 1962, Ronald Reagan switched from being a registered Democrat to being a Republican. Both parties were different than what they are today, but politicians are always politicians. Kennedy was a politician, no mistake about it.

I came home from school and my mom was crying. I asked what was wrong and she said, "Someone shot the President". And she cried some more.

I liked some of what Kennedy did and some things I did not, just like Nixon and Reagan.
