+extra layer of clothing. Ultimately the goal is stay warm, protected, and content (food/water). :P

Extra socks. And if you are building a get home bag, or if you plan on hiking any distance for your bug out bag, some hiking footwear. The wife works in an office so she has hiking boots with her.

You have to list out your needs and what you may anticipate for your situation. What if you are at work and suddenly without a working vehicle? You may have to hoof it home. SHTF does not wait for you to be ready to go at home.

Things I have My get home bag is one an the same:
- Wool, wool, wool. I wear wool shirts almost all the time, so my body is used to it and it does not itch me.
- Wool gloves, Socks (cotton ones too (tinder)), beanie cap, scarf, shirt.
- Extra Ammo for my carry piece. (for dealing with trouble on the way home)
- 4-5 ways of creating fire.
- Stanless hobo stove of my own making (It has 2 pots and more tinder/emergency fuel) in a pinch I can use sticks in it because it is steel and not aluminum.
- 3+ days of food that I can cook in one pot on my stove.
- 3+ ways of making water drinkable.
- an extra container (in case I come upon a water source and cannot purify on the spot)
- 55 gallon drum liners (emergency shelter)
- emergency blanket/tarp
- wool blanket
- a couple other odds and ends that vary on the season, but I pretty much keep everything the same throughout, because if SHTF I don't think the problems would fix themselves in one season, so I prepare for the worst.

In my EDC I have some of the above except on a smaller scale and stashed on different parts of my body. Plus a way of bartering. (90% silver, 1/4 Eagle or two) off and my carry pistol. If I am away from home for extended period, I have my AR pistol in the car.

Since ammo is still so expensive lately, I am thinking about packing a Dillon 650 in my BOB instead. That way I'm set. LOL.

In all seriousness, I actually started going through my bags over vacation to update/refresh them as well so it's fresh in my mind. I'd agree though the one thing you have to figure out first is what the purpose is. Are you putting together a 3 day kit to hike from your house to <somewhere>? Are you looking for a "get home" bag to have in case you need to hike it from your office to your house some day? Winter car kit? All of the above? Lots and lots of threads here and on many other forums with suggestions and ideas.

As with all of these SHTF scenarios though, start with the most likely problems you expect to face. Do you work in an office somewhere? Do you have a good kit in your car you could use in case you need to get home and have to walk? Did you remember warm clothes and comfortable shoes?

Maybe next - if your place is hit or going to be hit by a fire, flood, tornado, or other natural disaster, do you have a bag you can grab on the way out the door that you could live out of for a few days? If you have a family, think of them too. Consider that maybe you already have a kit in your car as a starting point if you can grab it.

Anyway, just think about why you want a bag before you start buying stuff you found on some list on a website. We've all been there, and probably have boxes of extra junk we're not using to prove it.

there are a ton of videos on youtube about this. you might consider starting with sootch00 and sensibleprepper. it's the same guy with two channels. lots of helpful info.

I like Sensibleprepper channel. I also made a list and started half-heartedly putting stuff together. My stuff has come a long way since then.
