    They are like any other tool. Use them wisely.

    My primary smartphone needs and priorities are simple.

    1. Make and receive phone calls.
    2. Send and receive (primarily) business e-mail.
    3. It is an indispensable portable travel tool - GPS, Airline, car rental, reservations, etc.
    4. The camera is for documentation purposes, mostly business, and for posting in the NSA's Post a picture of your latest purchase thread.

    Your situation sounds like a very valid reason to not own a smart phone. I wouldn't pay for a service I couldn't use either.

    At this point a dumb phone is outside my budget, which is why I don't have one. That said, the video makes me feel as though I'm not really missing out on anything that wouldn't be more trouble than its worth. Also, I work on a computer all day and have basically unsupervised access to teh interwebs.

    Modern liberalism is based on the idea that reality is obligated to conform to one's beliefs because; "I have the right to believe whatever I want".

    I have a smart phone. I use it when I need it but I really wouldn't miss not having one. I could do just as well with a plain old flip phone. It's just an expensive convenience for me.

    I think this makes the point too;

    I have a smartphone which I need for work email and on-call contact. I don't use it constantly. I can't stand social gatherings where everyone has their face down in some phone or tablet. Put it down, people. Interact with one another. Live your lives.

    I love my smart phone, really helps with work, enhances my quality of life, my son loves to play games on it, I can search for anything, take great pictures and video, set reminders for birthday anniversaries etc or I forget and it fits nicely in my pocket!

    The sad part about smart phones is how it's pretty much eliminated physical photo albums. Looking at pictures on your phone or streamed through your tv isn't the same as thumbing through an actual album.
