    Default Quick WISQARS Statistics

WISQARS is the searchable database maintained by the CDC. I ran a query looking at causes of unintentional death for children age 0 to 17 years, from 2000 to 2010. Anyone can repeat this search, so point the anti's to the CDC

For the period and population, deaths caused by:

    Nature/Environmental: 1065
    Firearms accidents: 1217
    Riding a bike: 1642
    Falling: 1647
    Walking (pedestrian): 7997
    Drowning: 10,513
    Passenger in a car: 20,344.

For ages 1-10 during this period, 371 died from firearms accidents while 522 drowned in the bathtub. Where's the outrage?

If they wanted to save the most lives, why aren't they teaching kids to swim, or making it illegal to have more than 2 inches of water in the tub. Tornadoes, hurricanes and lightning killed almost as many kids as firearms.

You know what's crazy? The solution to all of the above is "RESPONSIBLE PARENTING".

[well maybe not the walking part - if the kid's a clutz some things just can't be avoided, *hey* that's life.]

How dare you place the responsibility of parenting on (Gasp) the parents!
The problem is we have too many sperm and egg donors and not enough parents.

And if the parents' stupidity kills one of them, the parent gets sterilized.

I suppose the FBI has the listing of the intentional deaths for the same age range?

The FBI tables do, but so does WISQARS, and you can customize the reports in the latter.

Did you search each cause/mechanism of injury separately? I'd love to paste this on FB but want to make sure I can replicate your results....

I googled WISQARS; clicked on "Fatal Injury Data"; then "Leading Causes of Death"; "Leading Causes of Death, 1999-2000, National or Regional"; this takes you to the customizable query page. Picked 2000-2010 as my reporting period; under Advance Options, selected custom age range 1-10; submitted the query. There you get a one column report. Click on "unintentional deaths", giving a bar chart with categories like drowning and firearms. Click on each category bar for subdivisions of that category, like drowning in a pool; drowning in a tub, etc.
