    Default Marriage may require classes

Imagine that, a California group pushing for more laws. Up tp 30 hours of classes depending on which marriage it is. I know it's just a proposal but wow, just wow.

A California group has proposed a ballot initiative in Colorado that would require couples who want to get married to take mandatory pre-marriage education classes.

The Colorado Marriage Education Act would require potential spouses to complete 10 hours of pre-wedding marriage education. Twenty hours would be required for second marriages and 30 hours for third marriages, KDVR.com reported Monday.
A re-marrying widow would be be treated as a first-timer under the proposal, which would not apply to civil unions, according to The Denver Post.
David Schel and Sharon Tekolian of California-based Kids Against Divorce told the newspaper the intended purpose of the act is to "better prepare individuals going into marriage to fulfill their new roles as spouse and potentially as parent, to furthermore protect children given that marriage is the foundation of a family unit."
The group, which is dedicated to supporting children of divorce, will need to gather 86,105 valid signatures by Aug. 4 to put the initiative on the November ballot. The organization plans to propose similar bills across the country, according to The Denver Post.
"Education is the key to success in every aspect of life. This will have a positive impact on marriage," Tekolian said.
Alyx Reese-Giles, who was married for the third time in November, told the newspaper that despite completing six months of marriage counseling through her church, her second marriage lasted less than two months.
"This is the stupidest thing I have ever heard," Reese-Giles said. "The government has no business deciding what education people should or should not get before entering into marriage. Marriage is about communication and being ready to commit, and no class is going to teach you that."
The Denver Post reported that the ballot initiative also includes a tax cut for couples who voluntarily complete continuing marriage education each year to "reduce the billions of dollars taxpayers spend annually on divorce."

The catholic Church use to require (or may still, for those "active") X hours of counseling / discussion with the intended parties before they would marry you.
I would venture to guess in CA same sex couples would be 15 hours seeing how only 1 gender is involved

We had to do this (married in 1980) but since I was home on leave from the Army I got a pass of sorts on this and not having made my Confirmation as a young lad. Monsignor gave me the materials for self study after a quick compatibility test and an hour of counseling both of us. They never made it past the church dumpster. We've made it 33 years so far.

I took marriage counselling before getting married. My pastor (also a close friend) requires it if he is going to officiate your marriage. If your church wants things that way, then you are free to marry that way. However you should not be FORCED to. More government is never the answer!

I bet if it's government mandated, they would tell people to tell on their spouse to the government! Create a situation much like the one that they had in Nazi-era Germany. "Rat them out if they even chew their food suspiciously."
I don't make the rules. I just think them up and write them down.

I attended a wedding in August and just found out the couple has already filled for divorce. Divorce rate are stupid high in society but I don't believe in new laws being created to control the sheep. Wouldn't states want more divorces? More revenue from court fees and more business for 2nd and 3rd marriages.

The wife and I also attended classes at the Catholic church. I don't remember any of it though.
