Student severely burned after setting himself on fire

My parents had me old. I turned out ok. My kids are awesome. I got 3 and everyone always comments about how well behaved they all are.

I feel for kids these days. I see tons of horrible parenting especially in parking lots. A few times I've had to chase down someone else's kid.

On topic: if the kid thought life was rough, try living life with burn scars looking like melted plastic. Sad story.

I grew up with mine we crashed bycycles, shot guns, crashed dirt bikes, fished, had dirt clod fights, built forts, played football, etc,etc,etc.
They had chores, they got spanked, they ate what we ate, they were taught respect, they earned their $$, they bought their own cars.
I now have a fantastic grandkid because of my kids "upbrining"

Today you have day care, sitters, nannies, expect the school to raise them, give em $$$, all this in place of being a parent. They don't have time for them now and didn't want to "risk" a carreer by having them when they were younger. So they are so out of touch with them they aren't even in the same world.

Have a friend that had them later in life, they are the most fuked up kids you ever met. He got in a fist fight with one the other night.

If you're really lumping all older parents together and assuming they are all the same simply because they are older, you're an idiot.

I can't imagine that someone starts off thinking about committing suicide with fire.

Certainly wouldn't be the first method I'd try.

I worked with a lady that did it. She locked herself in her car, doused herself in gasoline and lit up. She left behind two little kids. This was a couple of days after being fired. The manager that fired her was shook up to say the least.

We could study this ad nauseam and never understand the actions of this young man. But also never find the solution to the problem. Opinions aside, lots of kids these days are fighting a battle we as parents cannot understand nor avoid. As a father I wish I could fight this fight for my sons, but I'm stuck watching them struggle. All I can do is provide all the support I possible and pray they accept it.

And just how to discipline?
You can't spank today because if your kid reports you you go to jail, or they get taken away.

I discipline by following through. When I say they will loose thier XBOX if they do something I am fully prepared to literally unplug it an take it to the used game store. I do not make empty threats.

Also both of the parents in my household are on the same page. We both have the same answer/consequense/rules/etc, and we call each other out on it. There is PLENTY of things to do other than corporal punishment. This goes back to my other post. I am not their friend, I am here to do my best to teach them how to get through life on their own and give them the best chances in life based on my experience. And I frequently remind them of this. I am their best ally, but I will not bend the rules of life to spare them from some hardship just like what would happen in the real world. I discuss this with them every time "the hammer falls".

I think there is a multitude of things including the fact that we are in a mass media age where very powerful people can pick and choose what we see on a daily basis in the news. If someone wants us to think "well hey there is a lot of kids out there doing bad things, I wonder why" then it is very easy to do so. When in fact these things happen at a small rate normally.

I also think that kids feel like they have no other way out. Anyone with a teenager knows how emotional they can be. If you shelter a kid from life and life choices and the consequences because you are acting like a tent and protecting them from the rain, you are doing nothing but setting them up for failure. When they suddenly start feeling the sting of the real world where you can no longer control every aspect of their life, they don't know how to handle it.

As sad as this story is, at least he had the decency to not try to take others with him like so many mass shooters do.

Not exactly, but he did scar everyone that he made a witness to it.

Sometimes people break. That's been a problem as long as there have been people. You can't legislate that away. Ever.
