Bottom Line: Has anyone approached John Elway and asked him to help support the Colorado 2nd A rights?
Often politics is a matter of popularity, rather than qualifications: EX: Politicians Clint Eastwood, Shirley Temple, Hulk Hogan, Arnold Schwarzenegger, etc.
Not to say that those individuals are/were not qualified, but rather to say it was more likely they achieved their political office by their celebrity rather than by their political merits.
Since Coloradans are almost as passionate about Broncos' football as Alabamans are about the University of Alabama (or Auburn) football program(s), I wondered how many people might change their attitude about guns if one of their football heroes was to speak out on behalf of gun owners and gun rights.
Looking through a few quotes, I found this from John Elway's Piers Morgan interview:
Morgan shifted to the topic of gun violence. He mentioned the Aurora theater shootings and asked Elway his views.
"I'm still kind of waiting to hear both sides of it," Elway said. "I'm a gun owner and I'm a hunter and I enjoy that and I respect the Second Amendment."
Morgan asked about people owning "military-style rifles that can pump out 100 bullets a minute."
"I don't own a machine gun," Elway replied. He said he didn't see a reason anyone would need one and said "that's the side I'm waiting to hear about." ***
To me, it seemed like he was holding back his real views and did not want to start scrapping with Piers Morgan. If you consider the line between Left and Right, he certainly was not on the Left side of it; he owns firearms so he's not straddling it; and if you ask me, he was posturing himself to be a bit on the Right side. It seemed like he just didn't want to come out and say "How Far" to the right he was standing on the issue during this interview.
So...
I wondered if anyone has approached John Elway to see if :
1) Would he perhaps help educate Coloradans about firearms (Tittle I vs Tittle II ; they look scary but are not; etc.)Note: If John Elway was going to speak in public on a topic that a) did not interest you or b) to which you were opposed, you'd probably stop and listen anyway, and even NOT heckle him, because ....well he's "John Elway", your hero.
And if he's your hero, you'd want to be MORE LIKE HIM, even softening your views a bit to align more with his views.
Kind of an "If it's good enough for John, it's good enough for me" attitude.
2) Is he really an advocate ?
3) Given a less hostile forum than Piers Morgan, would he be interested in speaking out on behalf of 2nd A rights ?
4) What if John Elway showed up to the hearings next week, armed with a well written, succinct pro-gun speech ?Wouldn't it be all over the news ?
The message might end up something like:
"If these bill are good enough for John Elway, they are good enough for me!"
"If you are anti-gun, you must be anti-Broncos"
...you get the drift.
We can speculate IF John Elway WOULD or WOULD NOT or WHY and WHY NOT take this position...but I wondered if anyone has taken the time and bothered to ASK him ?
Isn't it worth "a shot" (pun intended) ?
