I'll be switching my XP machines to one flavor or another of Linux, since I don't do any gaming. If I need XP, I'll run it sandboxed in a VM.

Windows 7 is good to go with the vast majority of software.

There are plenty of people around the world who would love to get their hands on the source code for these OSs and that would give us more choices.
If you want more options switch to Unix or Linux there are more flavors of that than you could dream of. Nobody really wants to get their hands on it except for hackers since they know that there are tons of people who mindlessly drink the microsoft punch and click away.

I run a mixed home with several flavors of Linux, MacOS X and even have one WinXP box. If I really need to use a M$ OS I run it in a VM. When I really need to run something bullet proof, it is done off a live distro and run in RAM. Don't trust what you can't source.

Nice! Yeah I only run M$ at work because I need to. I too have several flavors of Linux and a couple Macs. I quit PC gaming years ago so I quit the need to upgrade my computer every month or so and buy the latest M$ OS. Paying $300 for an OS was just becoming too big of a pill to swallow.
