Microsoft has extended the XP end of support multiple times now. It really does need to be put out to pasture.

You can continue to use it, but every day after 4-8 you're vulnerable to exploits that will not be patched. From what I've been reading, the attacks are ready to be launched beginning 4-9.

Office 2003 also goes out of support on 4-8.
I'm good with M$ ending product support after a reasonable point in time. What I have a problem with is they will never put their older, unsupported software under a public license. DOS as well as many other viable OSs would still be viable platforms if the public was allowed to Open Source them. There are plenty of people around the world who would love to get their hands on the source code for these OSs and that would give us more choices.

If you want more options switch to Unix or Linux there are more flavors of that than you could dream of. Nobody really wants to get their hands on it except for hackers since they know that there are tons of people who mindlessly drink the microsoft punch and click away.

I run a mixed home with several flavors of Linux, MacOS X and even have one WinXP box. If I really need to use a M$ OS I run it in a VM. When I really need to run something bullet proof, it is done off a live distro and run in RAM. Don't trust what you can't source.
