Problems setting up a WFT..

I have a couple thousand pieces of brass to prep so I decided to finally break out my WFT and set it up. Holy crap what a pain in the ass! I cannot get it to make a consistent cut for anything - my lengths are all over the place. I tried 100 pieces of FL sized LC '09 and got cuts ranging from 1.720 to 1.766; and this is after I 'adjusted' it (what a nightmare) for length (trial and error is the only way I can see to do this - as trying to get a consistent measure after torquing down the allen screws is impossible, even with a 'master' piece of brass in there). And yes, I kept cleaning it with a Q-tip.

Everybody was raving about this guy but I am big time disappointed. Are any of you guys running this setup? What am I doing wrong here?

Just purchased two, 1 in 5.56 and 1 in 300 Blk, yet to use them though As far as adjustment goes, I ordered a setscrew shaft collar to fit the shaft of the cutter and a set of feeler gauges Going to try adjusting that way As far as the inconsistent lengths I have no idea
Are you doing it with a hand held drill motor? I am going to use a drill press Same pressure on each, hoping to only cut less than .005 trimming. Also I think you are supposed to rotate the case a 1/4 turn before removing from trimmer, supposed to square up end That part makes no sense to me as it should cut square regardless

I just tried again - this time measuring headspace and shoulders on 50 pieces of FL sized LC 09 brass all from the same gun. I set the length on the a WFT at 1.750 using a micrometer and feeler gauges but the results were totally inconsistent - lengths way down to 1.722 to and up to 1.756. The largest grouping was in the 1.740 to 1.748 range.

This thing is going back.. guess I get to do a couple thousand pieces of brass on my little Wilson manual trimmer.

Anyone got a Giraud they want to rent me time on?

I like my WFT. Perfectly repeatable and trims everything to the same length assuming they are all sized before trimming. The initial setup could be tricky if you don't already have a piece of brass that is the correct length to use to set it up. Holding on to the brass while trimming it is my biggest complaint. Gets a little rough on the fingers after many cases.

Sorry it it isn't working out for you. It is a pretty nice setup for the price.

Danke for the pointer. That's basically what I did the first time but without the consistent results. The only thing I can think is wrong is that my shoulders are out of spec (something wrong with my FL sizing die -- Dilion Carbide) and fluctuating, so I am getting an inconsistent seating in the trimmer. Sounds weird but I cant think of anything else. When I FL size/deprime I have my die all the way down to the shell plate and then backed off a half a turn - nothing crazy or special setting..

If you have a Giraud that you are willing to rent time on I will take you up on it. Lemme know when, where, and how much beer/scotch you want.

I just got mine and ran 50 through it. Sooooooo much easier than my Lee trimmer and at least 10 times faster. I didn't have a problem with the set-up. Used a resized case that was 1.751 and let the cutter rest on it and tightened the screws. I did see that they'd set it up for you if you send them a few pieces of resized brass. Maybe that's an option before you send it back to the land of misfit toys.
