I know I'll probably get shit about it, but here it goes...
#1. I will say it depends. Example: Going against a skinny/jihadist/bad guy in a dark school/hospital/anything with long corridors (let alone running around the open); I don't want anything broadcasting my position. Home defense: I'm torn ( I always look at horror/action films and say, turn on your lights mofo!)
#3. I can't say "don't use" an AR platform for home defense, especially if that's all one has. Maneuverability, IMO, is paramount; and I see a pistol being more practical in that application (tight quarters with ranges typically way less than 7M). I also see the argument for 5.56: most jacklegs go pull a box of WWB 55 FMJ off the shelf at Wal-Mart and call it good. Remember; most of us on this board know 90%+ more than the typical Joe Blow.
Bash as you may...

I've got a wife and two kids I don't particularly want to poke holes in. I have a light on my gun to tell me what I am shooting at. That way, I know I am shooting at someone intent on doing us harm, rather than some idiot friend my daughter decides to hang out with at 2:00 AM. I have the #1 conversation most frequently of all shooting discussions on other places. I like to point out that a.) light bounces, so I don't have to point my gun at you to see you, and b.) stand in front of my firearm while I am shining a bright light in your dark-adapted eyes at close range. I am not terribly worried about giving away my position with the light. I'd do that just as well without the light when I cursed in pain after stepping on one of my kid's Legos in bare feet.
Math is tough. Let's go shopping!
number 8, i have had more than one asshat at a range fire while people are setting targets, even with warning and knowing that their are people downrange, well they are fifty feet to the right of me so i will be ok to start shooting again. morons,
number 10, have heard that a hundred times, check the weapon,
the weapon that has the best knockdown power is the one you are proficient with.

Not a bash but for #3 it depends on the layout of your dwelling. I have a nice clear shot from my bedroom down the hall to the stairs leading up. Plus I loaded some reduced powder but functional frangible rounds to deal with the over penetration issue. Any one uninvited comes down those stairs and they shall stay down permanently. As for the light issue, Id rather have it than not even if it somehow gives me away. That's why there are techniques to deal with light usage.

Overpenetration by 5.56 is crap. Unless you're loaded with FMJ (or frangible, which behaves like FMJ in meat and drywall). And I wouldn't have loaded a pistol with those for SD either.
Heavy-for-caliber JHP or OTM FTW.
And normally I don't believe in accidental discharges, but slam-fires and cook-offs do sometimes happen. Those are why the other rules are still important.
ETA: I would give up the last Liga Privada T52 in my stash to never hear "A shotgun is all you need to do is rack your shotgun to make a burglar fill his shorts, and load it with birdshot" again.

Man, you are not kidding. That one irks me.
Also, in regard to the light giving away your position debate I will say this. Unless your house is completely pitch black, (blackout curtains, no streetlights, no ambient light at all) your position is already given away. Silhouettes are fairly visible in most "dark" houses.
