On a mild tangent, I can look at my thumb and still see the piece of shrapnel that was lodged in there in 2002, when my shooting club first got steel plates and we set them all up perfectly straight at 10 yards and then ran a course of fire with ARs. A lot of lessons were learned that day, but not quickly; I was the sixth shooter through, despite watching three other people picking shrapnel out of their bodies after the course.
