Advice on purchase of a Ruger 10/22

I found a Ruger 10/22 at a local pawn shop for $129 and was wondering what kinds of things I should look for.

Here's what I know:

• It's got a beautiful wood stock with some scratches
• Blued barrel with some minor rust spots
• Length of pull is longer than others (actually fits me )
• Does not come with a magazine
• action feels solid and smooth

I wasn't able to see into the bore and plan on getting a bore light to look down it before I buy, but I've never figured out exactly what to look for. I know the rifling should have crisp edges, but what does "pitting" look like? Is it on the rifling or in the grooves.

Any help or advice would be appreciated!

"pitting" means just that,, Having "pits" in the barrel.. Kind of like a small lunar landscape...

In todays market, for $129.00 buy it. There is nothing on a 10-22 that can't be replaced cheaply (except the receiver) You can buy a magazine for around $14.00. You might try and talk them down a little on the price because of the missing mag. Always worth a try. If you get it check out Rimfirecentral.com. Everything you need is there.

if you don't want it post the shop it's for sale at. ANY 10/22 except a rusted shut one is worth that much for the receiver @ bolt assy. Even then, a little elbow grease and some horse trading on rimfirecentral and you'll have a very nice 10/22 for under $200.00

I'd rather have an older 10/22 than the newer ones. The older ones are built better than
the new ones that are going to cost close to $200 anyway.
