Many moons ago I was at a boy's home near Salina during high school days. Many of the patrons would donate horses and stuff for the tax write off.
We had four polo ponies that didn't work out for the owners for some reason. They were donated along with some polo mallets.
After the surrounding farmers had mowed their crops, we would help them throw bales for extra $$.
As was said the rabbits didn't have any place to hide for a couple months.
We'd take those polo ponies out, with mallets, and go rabbit hunting. Lemmee tell you, those horses can 'really' turn, and dumped a lot of us until we learned how to sit them. This was all bareback, saddles were never donated. We just had bridles and cinch straps. We'd ride up alongside the rabbits and 'thwack'. Great fun. (These were mostly jack rabbits, they didn't turn much like cotton tails)
Soon the horses figured out what we were doing and didn't need much guidance.
We'd take the rabbits back, clean them and give them to the dogs.
Did a little 'coursing' with greyhounds and coyotes too. Hard to imagine how fast those greyhounds really are until they run past you in pursuit.
Fun days...
