Yup and nowadays you never know. If you try to deal with it the neighborly way people are liable to fly off the handle these days and become violent. Better to have the police handle the situation. Plus it will be documented!

    steal (stēl)v. stole (stōl), sto·len (stō′lən), steal·ing, steals
v.tr.1. To take (the property of another) without right or permission.

Can't see how this is being debated... The guy did not take 50 bucks, he stole something worth a lot more, right?
The only way I see this as being permissible is if he is an undocumented American, then it is obviously not his fault.

Alright I left a nice nasty gram an dudes car asking to call me so I can get my tools back. He calls me and I didnt hear my phone ring. He called several times and I finally talked to him. He was very apologetic and his excuse was he thought it was the other welders torch from a couple shops down. I can guarantee he wont be taking my tools again as I dont think he's the type who needs police interaction. Maybe he is telling the truth but I wouldn't bet on it.....anyway I got all my stuff back.

FWIW, food being stolen in the workplace is usually indicative of a drug problem with one or more of the employees.
