Sounds like some of you guys need to learn how to wheel a rig with something smaller than 37's. I used to go up with a guy who took an old subaru into places you would not believe. Sounds to me this guy is talking about mild jeep roads, which colorado has thousands of them that require nothing other than 4 wheel drive, and even then you can do a lot without it. I have taken our liberty into a lot of places people said I coudnt, it has 31's. Problem is people with built rigs who need an 8 plus trail to be a challenge forget that there are lots of places that you can go with a basically stock rig.
If you learn your rigs limitations and how to drive it, at least one locker is a big help, the cherokee will likely take you anywhere, it sounds like, you will want to go. Its the same with guns. There are guys out there who swear that if your ar didnt cost at least 2 grand you are taking your life into your hands and bought a piece of crap. I generally toss the opinions that are on the far left or right and keep those in the middle.
I think you and Aloha are spot on. With only 28 posts and asking 4x4 questions on a gun forum..... Ummmmmmmm...... Ya.
He would not have lasted long here. I doubt that is loss to this community. If you ask a question, don't be surprised if the answer you get is not the one you wanted.

Well, this thread went all pissy pants. Since when can't people bring shiat up in CC?![]()
For reference, I took an Outback all over the FS roads around Hancock Pass last year. No problems. I did back off the road to the Mary Murphy Mine after about 100yds. It was a little too loose. Done about the same with a front wheel drive mommy van too. I guess it's how you drive, not what you drive.

Back on subject, WTF is the purpose of a 9 speed transmission in a car based SUV? I pull a pretty heavy trailer with my Duramax and have never said to myself that I could really use 3 more gears. Are they trying to make up for the fact that it has no 4 low range?
And this is why none of my rigs have seen larger than a 32" tire (actually most on 31's). A 31" tire, and rear locker have gotten me up level 8 rated trails. Anything higher than 8 I have no use for, as my rigs are typically daily drivers as well. A completely reliable DD, that can still conquer 95% of the trails in Colorado, is much more impressive to me than a tricked out, barely street legal rig, that can tackle BV carnage canyon or some of the others.
Anyhow, back to the regularly scheduled drama.
More gears lets the engine operate in the most efficient load/rpm range for fuel mileage. There are studies that show going from a 3 speed to a 6 speed can result in as much as a 25% increase in fuel mileage. Going to 9, 30% increase would not surprise me, if you drive on the spec course. So they charge you like $1K more, double your rebuild cost, bank on the fact that the 1st owner will sell before 80K so you can get 4 or 5 mpg more. If you do the math, it costs more long term.
CVTs and transmissions with more than about 4 or 5 gears are just part of the greening of the automobile while they ignore or suppress the technologies that their "market" research says won't sell.
This place is straight forward and sometimes brutal to those that are a bit limp wristed about internet criticism/comments/opinions, etc. I was harassed big time when I first got here. Just laugh it off man. There are lots of great people here.
Or get pissed and never come back. Your choice.
