I just dont get the fighting in hockey,

cheap shots sure, they do that kind of thing in a lot of sports, check a guy into the glass in retaliation for a hard shot on one of your other guys, i get it, football players do the same kind of things,

exactly when would you expect the wide out and the cover corner to throw down helmets and start punching away at each other?

turned me off of the game years ago.

One reason fighting is there is to prevent a shitbag like Matt Cooke from doing garbage like this. It used to be an honor system and help the players to self govern one another. 30 years ago a repeat offending douche-bag (like Cookie) would get handled and he would not continue to his shenanigans out of fear. That and nobody would want him on their team. Nowadays fighting is more about ratings and money and sometime to get the team going. Especially when you have another goon (Brendan Shanahan) as the "Disciplinarian" of the league.

Cheap-shots are much worse than fighting. They are classless and destroy good peoples careers.

I think the ridiculous shit that NFL guys beating on their chest and dancing around after and average play is far more shameful. NFL players are almost all Prima Donnas and know that they aren't gonna get an ass-kicking for actin' a fool. Please do not compare Football to Hockey either, its like comparing baseball and golf, they are different activities entirely.

    Well said, Roberth.

It was very clear to me, that when the second period started, the Wild coachs had given the message to the players to head hunt. The ineffective first period strategy failed, and they resorted to plan B.

There were some interesting views on "the ride home" on KOA today, Krieger struck a few chords with me, Logan did as well. I wish I could expound about it as well as those guys did, but I can't. If the Av's had retaliated similarly, against Cooke who is not a skill player anyways, it would make no difference. They would have to go after a valued player of the Wild instead.

Hits happen, injuries happen...flagrant intent to injure an opponent is inexcusable. Cooke should fined severely and benched for however many games Barrie is unable to play, including into next season if that's the case. The Teams ownership and coaching staff should be fined heavily as well. Message type deal.

The league has tried to cut down on this type of thing for years, and as the Bertuzzi event was mentioned.... this isn't the same league that it used to be, and for good reason. They should be making stuff better for the players, and should really stomp on the collective Minnesota Wild dicks with overwhelming certainty.

    this is exactly my point

actually you do have to compare the two in some light as they are violent games,

i just dont get it, if the cheap shots are such an issue then the refs and the league need to do a better job of discipline, cheap shot and you are thug you are out of the game and have a huge fine. and yes i am comparing this to the NFL at this point,

come over the middle and take a cheap shot on a defenseless receiver, you get fined, i realize these guys make a lot and the fines could be more, but if i take a cheap shot and it costs me $25,000 and my stats cause i had to sit out of the game i will probably not do that again.

and the nfl is getting to be safer by fines, better equipment and new rules, i dont see why the nhl couldn't do the same thing.

these kids get into hockey play really well in college and then get to the nhl to get beat up on,

the nfl would lose there minds if the players went at it in the middle of the field after a head shot to a quarterback, they let the league handle it. i think the NHL has just let this become part of the game. and they dont handle their players or their rules in a proper manner, their is no reason the players should have to have this mentality that they have to get into fist fights.

you dont see this in other levels of the sport, i am sure it has happened, but i dont remember olympic hockey, college hockey or little league hockey beinng the same way.

i am not certtain it is the players fault, i think the nhl has just let is be tolerated for so long that it has become part of the game.

I have no problem with the fighting. It's one of the things I like about hockey. Delfuego said it nicely. It's also a very physical sport, and I would suspect the fighting is also a way to blow off steam. 99% of the players respect each other. They may not particularly like each other, but there is respect. And it seems most fights are mutual. If they're not, the refs/linesmen do a good job of breaking them up. If the guys want to fight, they let them until it's over or they fall to the ice. They sit in the box for 5 minutes and the game continues.

The cheap shots and the intent to injure piss me off. Cooke has a hearing in NY today to decide his fate. I hope he gets hammered.

What I don't want to see is the game get pussified. There has to be a way to deter the Cooke's of the world without ruining the game. Sometimes the refs are going to make the wrong call on the ice. It's part of every sport. But for the most part I think they do a good job of judging the atmosphere of the game and letting the guys play without letting it get out of hand.

Off topic, but Delfuego, how does it make you feel to know that, even during one of CC's worst seasons, we still manage to win the Gold Pan?

I kinda wish Cooke would not get suspended, so when he comes out of Pepsi Center he gets thrown in the trunk of a car...

Matt Cooke gets suspended for 7 games. If (when) the Wild don't play 7 more games this season, Cooke will serve his remaining games next season.

This video explains the infraction and clearly shows Cooke's douchebaggery.

My brother and I were furious when the news came down that he'd be suspended for 7 games... Such bs! He's not like Todd Bertuzzi where it was a one time thing, Cooke is a habitual good who makes cheap shots whenever he can, and he gets suspended then back at it again. They need to make an example of him (or anyone who does this) just once, ban them from the NHL for life, then it might teach others a lesson that this crap won't be tolerated. I was calling for Bertuzzi's head after the Moore incident, mostly because it ended his career and what he did was about the lowest, dirtiest thing you can do in hockey. Strangely enough, Steve Moore fought Matt Cooke prior to Bertuzzi attacking him. I can respect the enforcers, the bruisers, and the fighters, but I cannot accept the goons who go out and cheap shot and play dirty. Cooke should be gone. I'd be very ashamed to be a Wild fan with dipshits like that on the team.
