You want a theory? The pilot or co-pilot was whacked out (why doesn't matter) and locked the door to the cabin after the other guy left to use the head. Upon locking the door, he vectored to take the plane where it would be harder than hell to find and flew it until it ran out of fuel, crashed and sank to the bottom. Done, end of story.

This is the most believable and simple. Isn't the simplest explanation usually the correct one? Isn't it true that we know more about the moon than we do our own oceans? 70% of this planet is water, pretty sure it's damn easy to lose something and run the risk of never finding it. They still don't know where Amelia Earhart is.

I wouldn't say that the OP's story was the right one. Not for a second. But don't confuse logic with simplicity. They aren't the same thing.
