Implementation and tier 3 administration (among other things) of the Mobile Device Management system for my company is one of my job responsibilities. We use one of the most expensive and robust systems available. Many of our employees have expressed the same concerns since we implemented this system. Even if I turn on SMS tracking (it's not on because I just don't care), I cannot see the actual content of any user's text messages. I can see where the phone has been via its GPS if I want to, and I can see what apps a person has installed. I can wipe the phone's data entirely, or just the corporate data (email settings, etc.). Believe me when I say I don't have any desire to see where the hell Joe Bob Shmuckatelly was last night, even if I had that kind of time (I don't). I carry an iphone 5s that my company paid for, and I use it for whatever the hell I want.

ETA: Most companies who implement a system like this only do so to be able to wipe the phone in the event it is lost or stolen. It is highly unlikely anyone is using it to spy on you.

Do not install gun related stuff on that phone. Do I need to tell the story of being fired for browsing sites like this at work again? That's not the whole story, but it's the one they used and I was still unemployed for almost two years and now several years behind my peers in wages.

Work phone - just use it for work related shit, and nothing else. You want a cool phone to play with, get your own and run amok with it. Same with a company vehicle or computer. Don't give 'em any reason to jack with you or the opportunity to do so. Toys are cheap compared to being jobless, get your own and run nekkid in the streets with it if you want.

As stated above, use work phone for work, pretty much cut and dry. Definitely not worth getting canned.

Winner. I've had a company phone (and vehicle and computer) for ten years. I've always used that stuff for appropriate company-related purposes only. I have a personal phone as well. That's for doing all the other cool stuff. Although, I haven't physically carried the company phone in most of those ten years since I don't want to keep up with two phones. I just forwarded all of my calls to my personal phone and tossed the company phone in the back of a drawer.

My personal phone is actually the 4S. I'm not really very tech-savy and I find the iPhone very intuitive and easy to use. If I get a hold of my wife's Android phone it just frustrates me and makes me feel stupid.

Wow that sucks, man. I guess I've been lucky never to work for companies that have enough idle time to jack with their employees.

+1. I too am responsible for this through my employer... There are many "controls" through such MDM's but it's largely just for policy, security, and remote-wipe capabilities. We cannot look at texts, pictures, etc remotely just becuase it's enrolled in a companie's MDM solution.

It was that my boss didn't like me, so used that info as evidence that I had threatened her. Cop sat at my desk for a month after I was gone.

Well if they ever wanted to fire me for gun related content on my phone at work, they'd have to answer why I have pictures and video teaching my Boss's daughter how to shoot
