Yes you are on the right track. You first need load data and ballistics on your round then you can dial from there. Or if you know, say, you are zeroed at 100 and your bullet drops x inches at x yardage then you can dial from there.
Do a google search for, like, how do turret scopes work or something and you will get some good ideas.
You out will need ballistics on your ammo and some more info on your scope to move forward though
