    Default Pronunciation of other countries

Some coworker was talking about how he's going to Mexico on vacation. Good for him.

During the conversation he kept saying "May-he-co" like Mexicans folks say it. It kinda annoyed me so I asked him why he said it that way. He said he was being respectful and just saying like it should be said.

I then asked him why Mexicans say "Estados Unidos" instead of "United States". Deer in the headlights.

Same goes for so many countries. Just bugs me when Americans think they need to, I don't know, conform to another language. Are they trying to impress someone?

Qatar is another one that bugs me. I thought it was "kah-tar" most of my life. Now I hear "gudder".

    I guess I'm a Neanderthal.

Neanderthal or NeandertalNow, what about the term Neanderthal? Most informed people prefer the more German-like pronunciation nay-ander-TALL. That's because Neanderthal is a German word and German does not have the th sound of English “the.” The Neandertal (the alternate English or German spelling) is a valley (Tal) named for a German by the name of Neumann (new man). The Greek form of his name is Neander. The fossilized bones of Neandertal man (homo neanderthalensis is the official Latin name) were found in the Neander Valley. Whether you spell it with a t or th, the better pronunciation is nay-ander-TALL without the th sound. There are some paleoanthropologists and other experts in the field who still say nay-ander-THALL, but they're wrong.

    Probably saying that wrong too.

Light a fire for a man, and he'll be warm for a day, light a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life...

We are not as bad as some European countries. Some of them get offended if we pronounce anything in English.

Some of us cannot even pronounce Heckler & Koch, Porsche, Volkswagon correctly in German either.

My father was just there and got corrected by the locals. They pronounce it like we say 'Guitar'... He also heard it like we pronounce 'Cutter'.
Pretty bad when the locals have 2 ways of pronouncing it.

I say lets all remove the warning labels and let nature take its course.
