Default New 6.5 Build Range Report

I started out using loads from resized 7.62 x 39 so I could fire form them while zeroing the scope and checking function. All loads used Sierra 120 grain Pro Hunter bullets since that is all I could find in 6.5. Once I felt I had a decent zero, I shot a five round group with the fire forming loads then switched to a load with factory Hornady brass and shot another five round group. This was out of a 24 inch BlackHole barrel chambered in 6.5 LBC.

I saw Cabela's Thornton had a few boxes of Grendel on the shelves yesterday. I didn't pay attention to bullet weight, just noticed them on the shelves.

They seem to switch off between 123g A-Max and 123g SST. Which are pretty similar ballistically. The SST has canalure and a negligible higher BC and MV.

Ain't all that pretty but wanted something for medium sized game and I think this will fill the bill. It seems to shoot strait, I just need to do some load development. I found some loaded Hornady 123SST ammo on the net and ordered 5 boxes. From what I read it seems to be a standard for the Grendels.

I'm sure speed goats would come to fear this rifle. Big enough for some deer as well.

There is a thread (6.5 Grendel forum) about a guy taking an Elk at 400 yards with one. I think ELK is BIG game, so i would say with medium game you will be fine. I am building my son a 6.5 for him to hunt with this next season. What barrel (bolt, mags) did you use? I would appreciate any help you wish to disclose; it will be the 1st, and I will use Double D Armory upper/lower/hand guard, and bolt carrier.

    Nice rifle, and group.

    Thanks!

Mine is a 24 inch BlackHole barrel (6.5lbc) with a 7.62x39 bolt. I am wanting to get out third season and the thought has crossed my mind of taking the 6.5. I have plenty of bolt guns "better" suited for big game but the Grendel so far has given me a high degree of confidence in shot placement. It's just a consistent shooter, even when fire forming the 7.62x39 brass with lighter loads it held the same point of impact at 100. At 300 yards it's dropping 10 inches.
