Nice pic. Is there a story behind it?

    Story sure,
This is near the Pakistan border, it is a 23 mm Russan anit aircraft gun. I was there watching our guys train an Afghan unit on the operation of the weapon. The rounds are about 7 or 8 inches long and they were firiing it across the valley at some boulders. On this particular day they were having some problems with it, to cycle the action it 2 guys pulling on cables with D handles on either side. I twas not working smooothly and it would only fire one round at a time. After the locals messed with it for a while our armorer looked at it amd found the the 2 cover plates were crossed. They had cleaned it the day before and did not assemble it right, after the re-assembly the action worked smooth and it ran as it was suppossed to until one of the firing pins broke so the remainder of drill they only used one barrel. This is reason for training and practice.
I took some video of the gun going off and I would share but the file is way to large.Having never been around weapons like this I found it to be thrilling experence.

They were also working with a rocket launcher but only fired 2 rounds from it because it was on a concrete roof and the recoil was destroying the surface.Click image for larger version.

I sat on Chinese zu23 before! They upgraded theirs w/ 25mm canon! And love that picture of SPG9 - it looks like gustav on steroid! Its a recoilless gun btw, not a rocket. 70-75mm range I believe. The Army have so many M40 surplus (105mm), we should donate those to the afghans.

    Thanks for sharing.. stay safe!

What are the sandbags for in the first picture?
