Default So...I think someone tried to cheat me

I called a plumbing and heating company out to get a bid for work. Leaky kitchen faucet, replacement of the disposal, rotoruter of the toilet. I also wanted bids on a hot water on demend system and an ac.

So we started with the kitchen sink...it leaks around the faucet and needs new o rings. He barely looked at it and declaired it cannot be fixed...needs replaced. The disposal was junk to begin with. Glanced at the toilet and declaired it is a design flaw and needs to be replaced. Total bid on that work...$2692.00

Hot water on demand...he says has to be repiped for the vent. Replace the system will run $6050.00. Vent will up it to $8825.00. Will have to cut holes in the drywall which will require someone else to come patch. With 1 year service and warrenty it will be $8825 and up to $11525.00 for 10 years warrenty and service.

They won't install the ac at all.

Do these numbers seem out of line?

Yes, you could do the sink, disposal, and toilet for a lot less than that, the other stuff sounds rediculous as well. I'd get some other bids.

I can understand not having a ton of spare time, but all of these jobs aren't bad at all for a DIY'er. Especially the sink and toilet.

I replaced a toilet last week including shutoff valve and new wax ring. Took me an hour to do it. I think she paid $100 for the toilet. Price he quoted are way out of line.

Thanks...didn't know if my expectations were just out of line or if things were really that expensive. I know that a tankless water system is only 1000 at lowes for the top model they carry. I have a little 1 bedroom condo that doesn't need anywhere that level of output even.

Yeah, sink, disposal, and toilet are no brainers. Honestly, it's entirely possible that they're fixable but he doesn't want to deal with it due to the minimal profit on repairs vs upgrades.

New hot water heaters require an efficiency rating that requires the vent. Even with that however, it's not that big of a deal.

If you were closer, I'd do the labor for a few hundred bucks and call it good but I don't have the overhead he does. I'd suggest asking around among buddies/work and organizing a work party. The skills to do this work aren't rare.

Don't forget the time and fees for homeowner replacement of water heater and vent work. And also scheduling the inspection.......

I do not have a large or expensive house but I redid the cabinets, counter tops, sink, disposal and fixtures for less than your sink repair. It was a few years ago but geez.

About the only time I would call a plumber is if the toilet was doing a 3' brown fountain. Not likely on a septic system but ya never know.

Some on here have done the HWoD. Wonder what the final bill was.
