We're not talking about basing a purchase decision on market share numbers or how many iPhones people bought. You claimed Detroit had lost "lots of market share" to the imports, specifically Toyota and Nissan, and the figures don't lie. They haven't lost "lots" of market share. Ford sold 763,402 F-series pickups last year. Toyota sold about 272,000 (Tundra and Tacoma), Nissan sold about 79,000 (Titan and Frontier).

Detroit trucks account for 93% of the light truck market.

Trucks are more fuel efficient with the tailgate on. Without the tailgate a low pressure area develops behind the truck effectively increasing drag. The airflow becomes very disturbed without the tailgate. It actually runs smooth with the tailgate. One of the big manufactures just confirmed this, GMC I think (and mythbusters did years ago as well).

And here's Consumer Reports test. Covers and tailgates down hurt fuel economy.

^^ I heard somewhere that the tailgate down thing was an old wives tale. Apparently it is.

I'll just set these right here....

I chose 02 because that's what year my Taco is, but I did my best to use all similar options, and used the same mileage across the board. There is a reason Tacoma's hold there value, and it's not because they are just magically more expensive than the rest. With that said, I looked at Frontiers and would not hesitate to buy one. Only reason I didn't is because in order to get the same options my Taco had, I was going to have to get outside my budget and buy a newer truck.

I'd go searching nationwide for a used 5.3 L V8 Colorado or GMC Canyon. 300 horse full size truck engine in a small truck. Or you could wait for a small diesel...

Holy awesome! How are they getting away with that? I might have to check them out. It might be a few weeks before I make the buy (camping next weekend), so I won't be test driving for at least two more weeks. But I will give the taco a shot, even though I'm about 70% on the 'san.

Not sure man. But I'd print that page out so at least you have some ammo when you walk in to a dealer that might be closer. Those Frontier's are sharp. I'm pretty sure I'll be getting a Nissan soon myself.

    ROFL

4spd transmission in that 'flagship' truck?!? Welcome to the 1980's. Want further proof of why I said what I said about domestic trucks, specifically the Canyon?

    Canyon

    (V8 5.3)
    0-60: 6.7 sec (avg.)
    1/4 mile: 15.5 sec
    Max Towing Capacity: 6,000 lb
    Engine: V8 - 5.3 L OHC 16 valve
    HP: 300 hp @ 5600 rpm
    Torque: 320 lb-ft @ 4600 rpm
    RWD / 4WD
    4-Speed AT
    Fuel Economy: 14/19 (avg.) mpg

    Tacoma

    (4.0L V6 )
    0-60: 7.0 sec
    1/4 mile: 15.4 sec
    Towing Capacity: 6,500 lb
    Engine: V6 – 4.0 L DOHC 24 valve
    HP: 236 hp @ 5200 rpm
    Torque: 266 lb-ft @ 4000 rpm
    RWD / 4WD
    Transmission: 6-Speed MT / 5-Speed AT
    Fuel Economy (MT): (RWD) 16/21 / (4WD) 15/19 mpg
    Fuel Economy (AT) : (RWD) 17/21 / (4WD) 16/21 mpg

So... the vaunted V8 Canyon is a tenth of a second slower in the quarter mile, has a 500lb lower towing capacity & gets a few mpg less than the Tacoma V6. 'Doing less with more for generations' should be the GM moto. It also cost more ($1300 option on the V8) in 2012 & is now worth less than a Tacoma. On top of all of that, that's one fugly truck inside & out. Interior design is early 2000's which is one of the worst interiors ever designed since it so closely mimicks those of 90's GM vehicles.. blech!
